CCOA Unveils New Programs to Explore the Sea Through the Lenses of Merchant Mariners
We’re excited to announce that more educational programs are here! CCOA continues to develop new hands-on learning experiences that utilize the unique education platforms of the tall ship Mystic Whaler and the Santa Barbara Channel. We have prioritized program themes that address specific youth education needs and interests that the community has shared with us. From Santa Maria to Camarillo, schools and youth groups across Santa Barbara and Ventura counties have already started booking field trips with us, ranging from day sailing adventures to dockside immersive experiences.
One such STEM program is our at-sea Echoes of a Merchant Mariner. This program combines a reflection on the historical uses and methods for sailing tall ships in the past while simultaneously challenging students to operate an actual 110-ft tall ship in the modern day! Students will better understand the 19th-century lives of those who brought cargo worldwide and bear the same responsibilities that persist into the 21st century. They’ll be expected to exercise their understanding of math, physics, history, and engineering to practice traditional skills such as navigation and mechanical advantage on this 3.5-hour sail.
CCOA is also honored to partner with prominent community organizations to deliver collaborative educational programming. This Spring, an exciting partnership with The Channel Islands Maritime Museum will allow students from Oxnard to build upon the learning that takes place in the museum with dockside ship-based activities on Mystic Whaler. Our collaboration with Santa Barbara Maritime Museum continues as well this Spring to offer a follow-up sailing experience to some classes who participated in CCOA’s Trading in California program last Fall.
Please get in touch with us to find out what program would best fit your class or youth organization!

|Winter Holiday Season Events
|Holiday cheer was abundant at CCOA last winter! On December 3rd, we celebrated the start of the 2022 holiday season by participating in the CIMM’s Lighting of the Tall Ship Mast event. Mystic Whaler was open for free deck tours while the museum hosted live music, holiday shopping, refreshments, and even a visit from Santa Claus himself! Then once the sun set, the community gathered in the museum’s courtyard to watch their tall-ship tree light up the night.
|December 10th was a busy day! In Santa Barbara, we participated in the Holiday on Milpas Parade, where our float, the Mystic Calf, made her debut to represent CCOA.
Meanwhile, in the Channel Islands Harbor, the crew hosted a special viewing party onboard Mystic Whaler for the CI Harbor Parade of Lights. Hot beverages and hors d’oeuvres were enjoyed by guests while decorative vessels made their way through the harbor.
Central Coast Ocean Adventures is a 501(c)3 nonprofit committed to providing adventure-inspired learning programs to communities that otherwise do not have access to such enriching educational opportunities. CCOA relies on donations to offer these programs at reduced or no cost to schools, community-based organizations, and families based on their means. Please consider donating today and change the life of a child through sailing and the sea.
Inclining Stability Test
Earlier this month, Mystic Whaler was graciously hosted by the Port of Hueneme for new stability testing!
Through a series of tests set up by our Naval architect, we can ensure the safety of the ship for any upgrades we will be making in the future and continue educating the youth of Santa Barbra and Ventura counties.

And now, for the update you’ve all been waiting for:
“Wow, what a rainy Winter we’ve been having! As you can tell, I’m not a big fan of rain, but I’m a sailor and must endure the weather. At least I look cute in my raincoat! I loved meeting so many new people during deck tours this December, especially during the Mast Lighting event with the CIMM. In the next few months, I’m looking forward to sailing more with my crew and continuing snuggle sessions to keep everyone warm. I hope to see you on one of our public day sails soon!”
