AdventureSail® Day with CIWSA
Central Coast Ocean Adventures Foundation is proud to be partnering with the Channel Islands Women’s Sailing Association (CIWSA), Channel Islands Maritime Museum (CIMM), and the Channel Islands Yacht Club (CIYC) for this year’s “Women and Sailing Across the Ages” AdventureSail® Day on Saturday, August 12th!
This full-day event is free and open to young women ages 9-14 who might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience sailing. Each girl may bring one adult with her if desired.
Starting at 9 AM at CIYC, participants will rotate through stations at CIMM, CIYC, and schooner Mystic Whaler where they will interact with and learn about female sailors and women who work in the marine or science (STEM) world. At the museum, there will be a special tour of the various art and visual examples of maritime backdrops to the stories of many famous (and some infamous) women sailors. At CIYC, the girls will participate in various activities for a multi-faceted introduction to modern sailing. On board Mystic Whaler, participants will learn about the history of tall ships in the 1800s and what life was like for merchant mariners, the chain of command and teamwork required to sail the ship back then and in modern times, the navigational skills practiced to guide her to her destination, and the importance of environmental stewardship of the ocean and coastline.
In the afternoon, the girls will apply what they’ve learned and go sailing! Participants will break into smaller groups and set sail aboard modern boats skippered by local volunteers or Mystic Whaler with Captain Christine Healy and her crew. Afterward, everyone will return to CIYC for lunch and a conclusion to discuss the future of women in sailing and feedback from the day!
